Programs for Colleges
Enfold offers a wide range of sessions and programs for graduate and post graduate students of different disciplines, as well as programs for teachers.
Comprehensive sexuality education and personal safety education is not yet a part of the central or state board curricula for school students or their teachers/the school management, or graduate and postgraduate curricula of disciplines like social workers, counsellors, teachers, special educators, nursing, medical education, public health, law or police training. This directly impacts the kind of laws promulgated, the services offered to children and adolescents especially in the context of gender based violence, sexual expression and sexual violence. Enfold’s recent policy brief also reiterates the need for comprehensive sexuality education and how its absence affects the manner in which adolescents’ sexuality is viewed and criminalised. The misconception that comprehensive sexuality education will lead to early sexual activity among adolescents continues to persist, despite research having proved otherwise.
In this context, it is imperative to advocate for inclusion of age appropriate, culture-sensitive values and rights based gender equity, sexuality and personal safety education, including information on relevant laws in the curricula of the central and state education boards. Enfold, with support from UNICEF, did this with the SCERT Telangana in 2016. Between 2020-2023 Enfold developed a formal curriculum and resource materials and trained 42 teachers of graduate and postgraduate courses from 6 streams (B Ed, Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing and Public Health) from 7 universities and institutions to conduct Gender Equity, Sexuality and Personal Safety Education sessions for over 300 students.. Enfold would like to advocate for inclusion of content on gender equity, sexuality, and personal safety in the curricula of higher education, including professional courses in four states for which we have in-house language expertise, as well as with the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP).
For students of graduate and post-graduate courses
To build capacity in the area of gender equity, sexuality and personal safety education, and restorative practices, we offer a variety of programs for students, ranging from short awareness sessions to training sessions over a few days to certificate courses and year-long post graduate diploma courses.
Enfold initiated and institutionalized a Peer Education program at Christ University in 2010 and trained 48 Peer educators to facilitate discussions on gender equity, relationships, sexuality, and personal safety. This system facilitates more acceptance of the desired change in attitude and behaviour regarding sexual rights and responsibilities.
The Peer Educators initiate, design, and implement the group learning process after due training. They are the change catalyst of the group. They lead semi-formal discussion sessions for their peer group on the above-mentioned topics. The group discusses what works, what does not, and which behaviours may be problematic in a relationship. Informed, scientific inputs and sharing of anecdotes by the Peer Educator in such a setting could bring about a shift in the attitude and behaviour of individuals in the group.
